30 December 1924: on this day it was formally announced that Edwin Hubble—working on the Hooker Telescope at California’s Mount Wilson Observatory—had determined that several “spiral nebulae” or “island universes” were far too distant to be part of our galaxy, thus establishing that the Milky Way is only one of billions of other galaxies in the Universe.
